O professor Tom Kitching, do Laboratório de Ciências Espaciais Mullard da UCL, é um dos quatro coordenadores científicos da missão Euclid liderada pela Agência Espacial Europeia. Ele diz que os dados que traz têm o potencial de determinar se a energia escura é ou não “energia do vácuo” – a energia das partículas virtuais que aparecem e desaparecem no espaço vazio. A missão é um enorme projeto colaborativo – só o consórcio que a propôs é composto por 2.000 cientistas e engenheiros de 15 países. O telescópio possui dois instrumentos. Um deles, o Espectrômetro e Fotômetro de Infravermelho Próximo (NISP), capturará a luz do espectro infravermelho próximo invisível. O outro, chamado VIS, irá capturar a luz visível. O professor Mark Cropper (Laboratório de Ciências Espaciais da UCL Mullard) (foto abaixo) lidera o projeto e o desenvolvimento da câmera óptica VIS há mais de 16 anos, trabalhando com equipes da UCL, Open University e em toda a Europa.

A câmara, uma das maiores já enviadas para o espaço, irá captar imagens panorâmicas de alta resolução de uma grande parte do Universo, recuando 10 mil milhões de anos e cobrindo um terço do céu nocturno. The laboratory, located in a Victorian mansion in the Surrey Hills, is staffed by 60 engineers and 140 scientists. It has supported 300 space missions. Instruments designed and built at MSSL have reached many corners of the solar system, from MarsMars is the second smallest planet in our solar system and the fourth planet from the sun. It is a dusty, cold, desert world with a very thin atmosphere. Iron oxide is prevalent in Mars' surface resulting in its reddish color and its nickname "The Red Planet."
